World

The universe runs on the power of Three.

First there was Aether.

Then, the Long Dark and Blinding Light.

The Primordials are the beginning of everything, the canvas that all other life is born from. Alternate realities, planets, the concept of passing time, and every speck of dirt ever brought into existence came from the three of them. Aether was, for all intents and purposes, the God of All, the most cognizant within the primordial sludge of the universe and its bickering “children” clashed endlessly. One embodied the desire for order and the other knew nothing but Aether’s personal suffering and longing. And since they spent most of their time inspiring the first record of aggravation in all time, Aether had a habit of sending them too barren planets to fight until they wore themselves out. That endless clash inspired a different being entirely, one that was equal parts of each, a new “God” that, unlike them, had two arms, two legs, and a pair of eyes.

Enamored with their creation and its boundless curiosity, the Long Dark and Blinding Light managed to stop hating each other long enough to entertain and observe their “child”. The Godling was so beloved by its predecessors that they too assumed physical forms of flesh and blood. In particular, Aether gifted its “grandson” a portion of its immense power: The ability to create at will. And create the Godling did. From the sensation of the Long Dark’s gentle embrace came Astaraea, and Blinding Light’s stern but mindful affection produced a feeling so strong that it formed Rehan, and Aether’s capricious puzzles inspired the Godling so much that it birthed Tomas. These three, the Godling’s first children, were the Progenitor Humans. The Godling himself was given the name Aurelius by the lesser creatures that loved him of their own will. And for an amount of time that is impossible to measure all seven of them were happy.

(But this wouldn’t be an origin story if it ended happily.)

Aurelius gave his children and parents everything they could need to exist happily on Earth: Soil to till, fire to keep them warm, wind to push the pollen, water to nourish all of them. Humans expanded at an alarming rate and lived equally with the Primordials and their own God. Unfortunately, during a wandering journey with the Progenitor Humans Aurelius, drunk from the first iteration of alcohol, slipped headlong into vicious cacti. He died a slow, torturous death that upended everyone who loved him.

While the Humans blamed one another, the conflict between Long Dark and Blinding Light was renewed. No one knew mourning, grief, or death, the Progenitor Humans were immortal and cocooned within the Primordial’s influence. The Light blamed the Humans as well and meant to kill them all, a sentiment that Rehan and his tribe agreed with. The Dark, knowing the affection Aurelius had for its creations, buried their child and, with the support of Astaraea and her kin, mounted a defense against their opposing force. The Grief War was ultimately useless: Both forces were equally matched in strength, and the humans on each side only threw themselves into a meaningless death.

Frustrated, Aether restrained its violent children to their respective bloodlines and deigned them to continue their squabbling while caged in human forms. To level their endless playing field Aether created three other, neutral forces: Father Time, Destiny, and The Fates. Unable to process its own loss, Aether gave his extra creations the task of allowing The Dark and The Light to fight as they pleased, but never to the extent that they should fully wipe out humanity. And then, frankly, the God of the entire universe disappeared, hands wiped clean.

Human society continued to flourish. The Dark and Astaraea would produce a child, the very first of what would become the distinguished Lunae clan. Rehan would fall in love with a woman from a differing tribe, beginning the Marfellows clan. Every other generation of each bloodline would have the potential to recognize and wield the Primordial that hid in their blood, and awakening them would continue their age-old conflict with each other. In 1884, Christian Scott Zora, like his ancestor Tomas, whose bloodline was weaker and supposedly “cursed” with Aurelius’ dead blood, decided that the Primordials and their Heirs were undeserving of their cosmic influence.

On December 3rd, 1999 Christian saw that ambition half-realized. Reawakening the Godling through blood sacrifice, he distorted Aurelius’ views of humanity, convinced them that they were no longer the innocent and worshipping children he had birthed. Confused and horrified by humanity’s propensity for cruelty, Aurelius ignorantly agreed and created an event known as The Split. 3.9 billion people died overnight, the sun tore open, and continents fractured as Aurelius and his rightful Heir, Christian, meant to remake the world entirely. Their cause was interrupted by the current Heirs of Light and Dark, as well as The Fates, Father Time, and Destiny. While Aurelius was killed yet again, Christian escaped and the neutral forces of the cosmos were at a loss for what to do and Aether seemingly ignored their pleas for guidance. Without Father Time and Destiny providing structure, and The Fates bickering even amongst themselves, a third world war began on June 18th 2008 and wouldn’t end until November 2097.

And it was during that final winter that Amelia Tennore, a songstress and battle nurse for the newly deemed Alseran Church, a territory which had once been “Canada”, “The United States”, and “Mexico”, slept with Solheim Lunae, the Prince of Kyrat, the nation which controlled what had once been Middle Eastern territories, who had enlisted in order to avoid his political obligations. Despite quite nearly everyone’s advice they did the unthinkable and had a baby together.

History

Solheim Lunae was never known for taking much of anything very seriously, including his marriage to Amelia Tennore.

While most of this was just flat-out laziness what had originally begun as a one-night stand in a nondescript hotel had become something of an international affair. As the Prince of Kyrat, a nation that ruled the entire continent of what was once known as Africa, and nearly a third of Asia, Solheim was groomed to become a world leader. His mother, Magdalenya made it a point to send him to the Alseran Providence, a newly formed country to pitch and finalize a treaty. He intended to do just that after several luxurious stops along the way, the last of which included a long encounter with a blonde haired, blue eyed woman with a voice that, within the Alseran territory, could soothe any tortured soul. Immediately attracted to one another, Solheim and Amelia spent two weeks indulging in one another before going their separate ways, only to reunite at the war table as representatives of their new countries. Bearing the weight of their elders, many of whom still remembered what the Old World had been like, their cooperation became the basis for the Tribunal, a group of fourteen representative that would serve as a kind of democracy for Alseran Providence and represent their country’s best interests to the rest of the world. When Amelia realized she was pregnant Solheim was overjoyed, as his child would inevitably follow in his footsteps and rule Kyrat after him. The joy was not mutual, but because the resulting child was noble by lineage as well as a symbol of hope for a war-weary population, Amelia was seemingly forced to carry her pregnancy to term.

On August 15th of 2099 Nariko Lunae was born in Kyrat. Unable to adjust to cultural differences and aiming to return to Alseran Providence, Amelia demanded they return to her home country, and that Solheim give up his Kyrati name if he wished to have a relationship with his daughter. Relenting, Solheim abdicated his royal duties to his younger siblings, Raawiya, and chose to live with his new wife and beloved daughter. Around Nariko’s eighth birthday, Nathanial Lucas Tennore was born, a half-brother resulting from Amelia’s extramarital affair. Unsurprisingly her parents began to fight regularly, and about nine months later Vincent Solheim was found stabbed to death in his own home, a sobbing and traumatized Nariko at his side. Devastated by the loss, Nathan became Nariko’s entire world and from then on the two were inseparable.

Because Amelia’s motherly obligations only extended to keeping food in the house and occasionally verbally and physically abusing her daughter, Nariko picked up all of the slack. Though he was incredibly sick with an unknown illness, Nathan was a curious genius of a child who adored his sister, and Nariko was able to care for him with the help of her childhood friends, Leah and Akira, whose parents were sympathetic to the Tennore children’s situation. At fifteen, Nariko began to experience severe heart palpitations, headaches, hallucinations, and severe dizziness. A fire at her school led her to a talking cat named Lucian, who insisted that she was something called an “Heir” an individual whose lineage gave them supernatural power. Over the course of the next few weeks Nariko seemed to attract others with the same title as herself: Leah, Serenity, Maki, Jeremy, Oscar, and Belvina. Under the guidance of their History teacher, Christian Kennedy, the seven teenagers were lead to believe that the unnatural events within Alseran Providence were the result of a cosmic imbalance. Their planet, which had barely survived a devastating world war that many of their parents had either fought in, or worked to bring to an end, was nearing a collapse on the same level as The Split. Christian explained that the planet itself was out of alignment, and that nature was thrown out of whack not only because of the cataclysmic events of the past but because the Earth itself had lost its connection to nature. As Heirs, all seven of them had the ability to “realign” the planet by clearing out holy sites, and tuning the magic within their bodies with that of the Earth’s. Doing so would restore balance and nature.

Rallying underneath Nariko and Leah the group put their trust in Christian. Over the next three years they traveled all over the world, faced supernatural creatures, the undead, as well as the Remnants of the past war, ghostly spirits that seemed determined to leave the planet in ruins. Within this time, Nariko and Christian fell in “love”, but their relationship was tempestuous to say the least. Not only was there an unhealthy age difference, Christian was unnaturally secretive and cold to her, he seemed at once livid with Nariko’s existence, and then unable to function without her. In her youth, Nariko was relieved and enamored to finally experience “real” love, and she ignored a sea of red flags, which included her own brother’s staunch disapproval, in order to be with him. As the group Tuned their magic with the planet there was a marked difference in their world: Long-dead oceans were returning over night, real grass was growing in spaces that had been mutilated by atomic weapons, and extinct animals were seemingly popping up at random. But the more they progressed the more Christian began to draw away from Nariko, before breaking up with her violently. Upset, Nariko was comforted by Lucian, and as they finished the last of their trials the two became closer, and when Nariko seemingly advanced to the height of her Heir Abilities, Lucian regained his physical body and the two became lovers.

When the final Tuning was finished Christian declared their mission accomplished. Having no reason to doubt him given the changes that each of the four remaining countries were experiencing, the now young adults believed him and intended to carry on with their lives. But after just a few months of peace and quiet, Belvina was found mutilated and drained of blood. Future attacks focused on the remaining six, all of which were thwarted by Nariko and Leah. Christian’s sudden absence made the already suspicious Leah theorize that he might have had ulterior motives, a possibility that angered Nariko who, despite her romantic feelings, had also viewed him as a mentor and best friend. After arguing with each other Leah and Nariko decided to set a trap: Nariko would find Christian and either get to the bottom of his timely disappearance, or she would call them in to help her deal with him once and for all. After spending a night together Christian proved Leah right: While they did, in fact, restore nature itself to a once dying world their adventures inadvertently provided Christian with the tools that he needed to resurrect Aurelius one more time.

He went on to reveal that while it was that Nariko was the rightful Heir of Fire and Darkness, and there were two other Heirs meant to work at her side, that her friends were ultimately normal human beings with a strong propensity for magic. So strong that if Christian sacrificed all of them he could return Aurelius to his former glory and they could rewrite time itself, back to the moment of his death and stop it. Doing so would, of course, erase all other life, everything that occurred after. Enraged, Nariko and Christian fought, and with the help of her friends they won and put Christian down for good. Unfortunately, due to a failsafe involve the true Heir of Light, Serenity, Aurelius was awakened despite their best efforts, but he was now devoid of a host that carried his original blood, leaving him weaker and even angrier than before.

Here, Aether, who had taken on the name Desiderio (or “Mr. Penguin” as Nariko called him) stepped in to control the situation. He offered to free the remaining young adults from their burdens: Their power held aspects of the rightful Heirs, of which there could only ever be three, and if taken away they would lose their memories of their adventures and fit back into the flow of time as if they had never done anything extraordinary at all. Battered, traumatized, and pained, all of them chose to forget one another, Nariko chose to keep her power because, despite the harm they had done, Desiderio confirmed that the world really did need balance. Without the original Heirs present and functioning, reality was strained, and the Earth would never return to its Pre-Split state if the other two Heirs weren’t found and revitalized after being gutted by Christian.

Suddenly on her own, Nariko focused her time and energy on finding the other two Heirs, who turned out to be her own brother, and Dizzy himself. After what can only be described as a tense family reunion, it was decided that Aurelius still couldn’t be allowed to continue living, leaving the original Long Dark and Blinding Light - Lucian and Vergil - to kill him once and for all. Lucian, despite supposedly begin in love with her, couldn’t bring himself to kill Aurelius and instead passed his immense power on to Nariko, making her the new Blinding Dark, the bastion for human negativity, and the framework that maintains the cycle of life and death.

Abandoned yet again, Nariko made the quick, executive decision to completely ignore that Aurelius even exists. This was due in no small part to losing a good chunk of her human functions, a vicious change that she’s struggling to handle. No longer needing to sleep, eat, or regulate herself in any meaningful way, Nariko maintains a human appearance because she strongly relates to still being human, it is an aspect of her identity that she can’t let go of despite her new immortal status. There is no heart in her chest, no stomach or organs to damage, by accepting Lucian’s title and power she has come millions of miles from where she originally started. Now, completely on her own for the first time in her life at twenty-two years old, Nariko is attempting to adjust to her job as “Death” or “Guardian of Humanity” or “Halfling” or whatever anyone else within the non-human world chooses to call her.

The only thing that remains the same, after seven years of constant change, is her desire to help other people.
